About the Air Training Corps

General Information:

The Air Training Corps is a disciplined and uniformed youth organisation for young males and females between the ages of 13 and 18 years.

The Air Training Corps is one corps of the New Zealand Cadet Forces which also encompass the New Zealand Cadet Corps, and the Sea Cadet Corps. Each of the three corps has its own distinct and unique military flavour.

Aims of the New Zealand Cadet Forces:

  • To provide a challenging and disciplined training activity which will be useful in both the Services and in civilian life.

  • To promote an awareness and appreciation of the Services and the role they play in the community.

  • To foster the spirit of adventure and teamwork and develop those qualities of mind and body which go to making good citizens and leaders.

History:

1938  

The Air Defence Corps (ADC) was formed by the Air League of The British Empire.

1939

World War Two Began

1940  

The Royal New Zealand Air Force took control of the ADC and renamed it to the Air Training Corps (ATC).

1941  

The NZ war cabinet approved the setting up of the ATC

1944

The roll peaked at 9200 Cadets

1945  

The composition of the ATC was:
 - 105 Country Units
 - 65 School Units
 - 6500 Cadets
 The rundown of permanent ATC staff began this
 year
 World War Two ended

1947  

 - 65 Town Units
 - 57 School Units
 - 5000 Cadets

1948  

 - 44 Town units
 - 55 School Units
 - 4850 Cadets

1949
/1950
 

Compulsory Military Training (CMT) was introduced.

1957

CMT was suspended by the Government

1959  

Emphasis change in the ATC was reflected in the change of the motto from "We Train to Kill" to "We Train to Serve"

1962

21st Anniversary of the ATC in NZ

1972  

The support from the RNZAF for ATC was withdrawn and the New Zealand Cadet Forces (NZCF) was formed

1978  

The ban on female cadets was lifted
The Air Cadet League (ACL) was formed with the following aims:
 - to promote and sustain interest in ATC
 - to stimulate in the ATC an interest in flying
 - to assist the ATC in furtherance of the aims of the
   NZCF

1991

The ATC celebrated its Golden Jubilee

1993  

The ACL changed its name to the "Air Training Corps Association of New Zealand"

1994

Quick Information:
:: Age ::

Males and Females between the ages of 13 and 15 may join.

:: Uniform ::

ATC Cadets wear a uniform, similar to the RNZAF. Uniforms are included in the fees.

:: Supervision ::

ATC Cadets are supervised at all times by fully trained officers, cadet staff and instructors. All activities are conducted under a strict NZ Cadet Force Code of Behaviour.

:: Cost ::

Units charge parents a fee each year to help pay for the running of the unit. We also have a few payment options.

:: Career Options ::

Our training can give you valuable skills for any job involving responsibility. Many cadets join the Navy, Army or Air Force after they have served their time in the Cadet Forces. The training cadets receive in leadership and self-discipline prepares them well for service to their community.
